NEIGHBORHOOD HIGHLIGHT

Sidewalk Gallery: Chalk Art Brightens Our Walks

Guest article by Bruce Donaldson

If you’ve taken a stroll through the neighborhood lately, you may have noticed something magical appearing at ground level: a burst of color on the concrete, a character peeking out of a “crack” in the sidewalk, or a scene so carefully shaded it almost looks like it has depth. That’s the handiwork of one of our young neighbors, who has turned ordinary pavement into a rotating, open-air chalk gallery.

What makes their work stand out isn’t just the subject matter, it’s the craftsmanship. Their drawings have a bold storyboard style, with confident outlines and thoughtful shading that gives faces, fabric, and shadows real dimension. In one piece, they create the illusion of a character emerging from the sidewalk itself, complete with cracked concrete lines and a pool of blue “water” beneath. In another, a plain square of pavement becomes a dramatic night scene inspired by classic swirling-star artwork, with bright orbs of light and sweeping sky patterns that feel alive.

A fun part of this sidewalk gallery is the variety. One week you might spot a whimsical fantasy character popping out of a drain-like opening. Another week, a gentle holiday scene rendered with surprising softness and attention to detail. Seasonal themes make frequent appearances too, from playful autumn vibes with costumed, cartoon-style figures to heartfelt tributes like a powerful bald eagle portrait paired with a message of gratitude.

Even when familiar characters and scenes appear, they are made unique through bold color choices and expressive faces. You can tell the artist is studying how to blend chalk, how to build highlights and shadows, and how to use the sidewalk’s texture as part of the finished piece. And as any chalk artist knows, the sidewalk does not always cooperate, so the patience alone deserves applause.

There’s also something wonderfully neighborly about chalk art. It’s temporary by nature. A breeze, sprinklers, shoes, or the next rain can erase it, which makes each drawing a small moment of beauty you catch while it’s here. It’s art that doesn’t ask for a gallery wall, it just quietly turns your afternoon walk into a little surprise.

A few ways we can support our sidewalk artist

• Look, smile, and share the space. If you see a fresh piece, give it a wide berth so it can live a little longer. • Leave a kind note in chalk. A simple “Love this!” nearby is like applause that doesn’t make any noise. • Offer supplies, if you’d like. Extra sidewalk chalk could become the next masterpiece.

Thanks to our talented young neighbor for sprinkling a little color across our corners and curbs. Our sidewalks have officially been upgraded from “pathway” to “place.” 🎨

You can find this art at 69th Ave & Monona Drive in Sierra Verde
