I’ve never understood the school schedule here in Phoenix. It sure seems like it would make more sense to not cool all the schools for the entire month of August, start in September and extend the school year into June, but no one asked me. 🤷♂️

Sick of your HOA?
I really hope this turns out well. I think there can be real value in this website, but I am afraid it is going to be a mess.
There is a new website, called HOADoctor.com, launching in August that will be dedicated to leaving reviews for HOA boards & HOA management companies.
I think this is a great concept and will create another level of accountability for HOA boards & board members.

ARIZONA TRIVIA
What major crop helped establish Glendale’s agricultural success in the early 1900s?
Last week’s trivia question was, Which military air flied built during World War II, later because the site of a major college campus in Glendale? The answer is: Thunderbird Field

Nestled in Glendale, Arizona, Thunderbird Field began as a critical part of the United States’ World War II pilot training program and evolved into one of the world’s premier institutions for international business education. Built in 1941, the airfield was one of three such training facilities in Arizona and played a vital role in preparing Army Air Corps pilots for war. Its location—chosen for Arizona’s clear skies and mild climate—made it ideal for year-round flight instruction.
Constructed with backing from Hollywood investors like actor Jimmy Stewart and producer Leland Hayward, the airfield was developed by Southwest Airways (no relation to the current airline). Its most striking feature was its layout, designed in the shape of a Thunderbird, a symbol from Native American mythology. Thunderbird Field included hangars, barracks, a control tower, and other key infrastructure needed for military aviation training.
During the war years from 1941 to 1945, the base trained over 15,000 pilot cadets using aircraft like the Stearman PT-17 and Vultee BT-13. Though operated by civilians under military supervision, Thunderbird Field was an essential component of the war effort, turning out thousands of aviators in a compressed time frame.
After the war, the site’s purpose shifted from defense to diplomacy. In 1946, retired Army Lt. Gen. Barton Kyle Yount acquired the property and established the American Institute for Foreign Trade, later renamed Thunderbird School of Global Management. The institution became renowned for its focus on international business, cross-cultural communication, and global leadership.
Today, Thunderbird School is part of Arizona State University, continuing its legacy on the original airfield site. Many of the base’s original buildings, including the historic control tower, are preserved and still in use. Thunderbird Field is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is commemorated with a veterans memorial honoring those who trained there.
