COMMUNITY NEWS

Please slow down in the neighborhoods

Tragedy stuck in our community this past week and a student was critically injured due to a collision while riding their bike to Mountain Ridge High School.

Put your phone away, be alert and look twice when driving near our schools. Please.

It was 118* on Thursday, the hottest day ever in August, and I was feeling it 🔥🥵

I tried something new from Westy’s Organic Kitchen & Juice, check out the full review here.

Babe Italian Eatery remains closed

Construction continues on the expansion & remodeling of their Arrowhead Ranch location at 67th Ave & the Loop 101, in the Safeway Center.

Phila Deli AZ has closed

The local eatery specializing in Philly cheesesteak sandwiches announced their closure. They were located near Eos Fitness at 58th Ave & Loop 101

False alarm on Whataburger location?

About a month ago, the boards came down off the windows at the former Whataburger location next to Home Depot at 67th Ave & Bell Road. There was hope this was a signal of the beginnings of improvements and a new business to occupy this property, which has sat vacant for 15 years. Unfortunately, fresh plywood now covers all the windows.

ARIZONA TRIVIA & ARROWHEAD HISTORY

Last week’s trivia question was, What major crop helped establish Glendale’s agricultural success in the early 1900s? The answer is: Sugar beets

While the sugar beet industry didn’t last long, its impact on Glendale’s early economy and growth is undeniable. It jumpstarted industrial development and made the city a key player in Arizona’s agricultural story.

In the early 20th century, sugar beets played a crucial role in Glendale’s transformation from a desert settlement into a thriving agricultural community.

Why sugar beets? The crop was well-suited to the fertile soil and irrigation potential of the Salt River Valley, especially after the completion of the Arizona Canal, which brought much-needed water to the region. Sugar beets became a valuable cash crop due to high demand for domestically produced sugar.

Beet Sugar Factory: In 1906, the Arizona Sugar Company built a large sugar beet processing plant just outside Glendale. This was a major development—one of the first large-scale industrial projects in the West Valley. The factory provided jobs and brought an influx of workers and families to the area.

Economic Impact: The sugar industry spurred additional farming, rail infrastructure, and housing. Local farmers began growing other crops too, but sugar beets were the catalyst that turned Glendale into a regional agricultural hub.

Community Development: The industry helped fund public improvements and support a growing population, laying the groundwork for Glendale’s expansion in the decades to follow.

Decline: By the 1910s, declining beet quality, falling sugar prices, and increased competition led to the closure of the plant. Still, its short-lived but powerful influence had already put Glendale on the map.

FORGOTTEN HISTORY OF ARROWHEAD RANCH

An interesting article was shared to the Everything Arrowhead Facebook Group this week. Many commenters were not aware of the sordid past of our community and alleged ties to the mob, which led to the death of a reporter for the Arizona Republic.

You can read the full article here.

Can I ask a small favor? Would you mind taking a quick survey to let me know how we’re doing with the newsletter? It will help me tailor what we cover in the newsletter & on the website, to the real needs of readers just like you. It is just five questions and takes 2 minutes. 🙏

I mentioned I was in Colorado this past week. Here are a couple of images I’ll be using this weekend to mentally escape this heat…

It was less than 50* at both locations…🤦‍♂️

Andrews Lake, just east of Silverton

East River, north of Crested Butte
